Climate-Resilient Infrastructure for Water and Sanitation

There is an urgent need to expand and rehabilitate water supply and sanitation infrastructure globally to reach billions of people who are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Water supply and sanitation infrastructure has been historically underfunded. According to the World Bank, investments in water supply and sanitation infrastructure must at least triple to fully achieve SDG6.1 Climate change will exacerbate the water crisis, particularly for those living in poverty, as increased storms, floods, and droughts damage infrastructure and increase water stress.

While infrastructure investments have grown by 350% in the last decade2 , only 1.9% of commercial financing went toward water and sanitation infrastructure specifically.3 Critical areas across the water supply and sanitation value chain that need immediate investment include growth companies active in water and sanitation infrastructure, public and private water utilities, enterprises focused on water grid improvements, water and sewage treatment, and wastewater and fecal sludge management.

WaterEquity invests across the water value chain from bulk water, to distribution, to wastewater treatment and reuse. Investments can fund both municipal and industrial needs, with a focus on impacting low-income communities, integrated water resource management, and climate resilience.

Eligible investments include:

Infrastructure Projects: Small to mid-market projects, structured as public-private partnerships or investment platforms.

Growth companies: Companies in the water value chain with a proven business model and looking to scale up, engaged in activities such as engineering and construction, operations and maintenance, and equipment and technology.
